Say the child's name. This is one of the most meaningful things you can do and one of the things people are most afraid to do. Bereaved parents live in fear that their child will be forgotten. When you say "I was thinking about Emma today" or "I saw something that reminded me of Jake," you are telling the parent that their child's life mattered and is still remembered. Do not avoid the name because you are afraid of making the parent sad. They are already sad. Hearing the name brings comfort, not pain.

Do not say "let me know if you need anything." Grieving parents cannot articulate what they need. Instead, just do things. Bring food. Mow the lawn. Take the surviving children for the afternoon. Handle the phone calls and logistics that pile up during a crisis. Show up with coffee and sit in silence if that is what they need. The specific action matters less than the fact that you are there.

What Not to Say

People who have never lost a child often say things that are intended to comfort but that actually cause additional pain. "Everything happens for a reason" implies that the child's death served some higher purpose, which is unbearable to a parent. "God needed another angel" suggests that God's needs outweigh the parent's, which can be devastating to a person of faith and offensive to a person without it.

"At least you have other children" implies that children are interchangeable, which they are not. "You can have another baby" reduces a human being to a replaceable commodity. "They are in a better place" suggests that being away from their parents is somehow better than being with them. Each of these phrases, however well intentioned, minimizes the loss and dismisses the parent's pain.

The safest things to say are the simplest: "I am so sorry." "I love you." "I am here." "I do not know what to say, but I want you to know I care." You do not need to have the right words. You need to have the right presence. Being honest about your own helplessness is better than filling the silence with platitudes that do more harm than good.

Support Groups and Organizations

They offer local chapter meetings, online support groups, an annual national conference, and resources for parents, grandparents, and siblings.
